William R. Smoot Sr.

Security guard

William Russell Smoot Sr., 71, of New Ellenton, S.C., died Aug. 25, 2009, at his residence. One of 13 children of the late Harvey French Smoot and Cecil Virginia Riley Smoot, he was born in Washington, Va., where he lived before moving to Aiken County in 1982.

He retired in 1988 as a security guard at Aiken Technical College. He also had worked as a carpenter and a small engine mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Virginia Prince Smoot of New Ellenton; three sons, William R. Smoot Jr. of Washington, Va., Cecil Franklin Smoot of Front Royal, Va., and Gregory Allen Smoot of Bealeton, Va.; two daughters, Patsy Michele Smoot of Culpeper, Va., and Vicky Lynn Smoot Rutland of Langley, S.C.; 10 grandchildren ana 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Bunnie Shelton Smoot of Millington, Md., and two sisters, Peggy Parmley of Baton Rouge, La., and Mildred Riley of Winchester, Va. Memorial services were held Aug. 29 at Pine View Baptist Church, New Ellenton, with the Rev. William Eaves Jr. officiating. Memorial donations may be directed to the Carolina Cancer Center, 111 Miracle Drive, Aiken SC 29801. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW, Aiken, S.C., is assisting the family.
