County High School in 1968 at the age of 21. His first year, he was barely older than some of the students he was teaching. This year will mark his 42nd year at RCHS.
He’s taught the grandchildren of students he taught decades ago, but you would never guess his tenure has been so long. He playfully banters with students in their own vernacular, and he bounces around the classroom as if this were his first day in school.
Jackie Settle - head volleyball coach at the high school and also a former student of Flinchum's - remembers him that way, too:
“He was very witty, with a great sense of humor and made class a lot of fun," she said regarding a ninth-grade English class she had with him more than 20 years ago.
Flinchum has seen a lot of changes and has been changed himself, he said. He is a lot more tolerant and open than when he first started, he said.
