During the dispute over Dominion
Power lines, one of the good arguments made to counter the need for extrapower was the one for conservation. We were told then, and many of us agreed, that monitoring and controlling our own use of power would help our individual bottom line, as well as, lowering demand in our region. Ultimately, as we’ve all heard, it’s also a question of national security - as oil producers are dominated by countries hostile to the United States.
In this atmosphere it was striking to walk into Rappahannock County Elementary school on a hot, humid day on Aug. 12 to find the front doors wide open as air conditioners were turned up full blast.
Rappahannock County Supervisor, Ron Frazier and I were visiting the school to check the condition of the w indows, which the School Board wants replaced at an estimated cost to the county of $1,173,000.
Even though the school was not in session, with no students present, we visited unoccupied classrooms with air conditioners set to 65 degrees. The air conditioners to the unoccupied gym also were running at full force.
