In the Ameresco report, it was noted that the programmable thermostats were set on “hold,” which meant the schools were being air-conditioned, ventilated, or heated 24/7 whether ix-cupied or not. Now, at least five months since that report, the thermostats are still set on "hold." We saw this with our own eyes. ■
In addition to new windows, the School Board seeks to replace all the air conditioners as well. Even though there were no students or teachers in the rooms we visited, they were cool and comfortable, even chilly. So, where’s the need or the logic in replacing these air conditioners, especially when the estimated cost to the taxpayer is $360,000? They were obviously working well. The new replacement air-conditioners are not any higher in efficiency than what is currently in use.
The School Board also wants to replace the control units for the heating systems, though very little maintenance was done to the existing units over the past six years. Taxpayers' funds previously designated for this purpose were reallocated by the board for other uses Now, having neglected the proper maintenance required, the board wants an additional $495,000 for new operating systems for the boilers.
