He said the 70s were exciting because it was a decade of immense change. However, “changes in the last 10 years I haven’t enjoyed as much," he said.
“The demographics have changed,” he said. “Nice properties where once families lived, are now being bought by retired couples” from outside the county.
Most teachers, he said, no longer live in the county - they can't afford to - and so are no longer as involved in the lives of the students.
While waiting for the students to finish, Flinchum pulled out a letter from an exchange student from Germany he had in one of his classes 23 years ago. The letter had been sent earlier this year. He was reluctant to give it to a reporter as it touches on the very intimate and delicate relationship that good teachers try to nurture in students.
“Dear Mr. Flinchum,” this one said, “you are a wonderful teacher.” But instead of delving into how one may have learned a difficult subject or overcome some aversion to English grammar, this one said:
“It was not so much the English grammar or the vocabulary...it was the things you taught us about life. You
