LINER HITS PIER: Only Slight Damage High winds sweeping across Eng land slammed the giant new liner United States against a pier at Southampton and delayed her de parture for home. The 53,000 ton liner suffered only superficial damage-. Seven tugs fought to get the vessel away from the pier, but finally had to give up because of the high wind. The liner was leaving for Le Havre and then New York but as the lines were cast off, the star board bridge wing, on which Capt. John Anderson was standing, struck two giant cranes. For a moment the United States was caught in a tangle of steel. HAWAII: New GOP Governor Hawaii Republicans are getting ready fur the day when, tor the first time since March, 1934. the territory will have a Republican governor. He also served during World War II. leav ing the navy with the rank of cap tain. He has served several terms as delegate to Congress. Another possibility is Lt. Gen. Henry S Aurand. United States army, retired, who is now engaged in business in Honolulu. He is a 1 personal friend and classmate of General Eisenhower. However, he may be ineligible because, al though he has lived in Hawaii more than the required three years, most of the time he was commandirg general of the army in the Pacific.
