4. On a 11 acre ladino clover orchard grass pasture a Mr. Warren of Mecklenburg county pastured 19 seven-hundred pound ! yearling steers, 23 hogs and a few mules. During hot dry weather the hogs were removed from ladino and put back after the ladino had recovered from rain.
5. On the first eight acres of ladino clover—orchard grass pasture seeded by Turpin Willis of Culpeper, grazing for 48' cows was otained for a total of 60 days while of course he grazed less cows at intervals to allow the pas# ture to recover.
6. William Smith also of Culpeper, finds that his cows obtained their fill on ladino clover— orchard grass in 11 hours . . .rest of the time in the shade resting and making milk while on the old permanent pastures it took same number of cows 5 to 6 hours to get their fill of grass.
Mr. Lewis advised that farmers seed 25% to 50% of their total pasturage to ladino clover’orchard grass. The limiting factor being an insurance against the farm because over stocking during a drought. Of course any farm might become over stocked during a drought even when there is only old type pastures as was the case in 1930. Mr. Lewis simply doesn’t want farmers to become over enthused by the carrying capacity of the ladino cloverorchard grass pasture, in view of the current high cost of dairy and beef cattle particularly.
