In 1861 he became one of the commissioners to Virginia, when he made a brilliant speech, urging secession upon that state.

He was assigned chief of conscription department with the rank of brigadier general.
He graduated from HampdenSydney College in 1824, studied at the University of Virginia anil at Harvard, and after an extended tour of Europe settled in Columbia.
He was engaged at the first battle of Bull Run.
