Unsung Heroes
This county — not unlike all other counties—has it's unsung heroes: members of county boards managing public business. They are paid nothing, but even if the ealaries were enormous, they wouldn’t be sufficient to compensate for all the headaches and worries connected with the duties.
For particular note here are the members of the school board. t_What seems an excellent suggestion is passed on at this time. Require everyone to attend at least one of the sessions of the school board. Let them witness the board members in one of those sweat-it-out meetings until after midnight—h earing complaints; trying to arrange bus schedules so 20 mothers and fathers won’t jump up and howl because a bus is re-routed to help four children; trying to solve problems in everything from where to get bus repairs to how to fix the sewage systems; trying to decide administrative problems, bearing in mind that as employers they must consider the welfare of the employees, as custodians of funds they must protect public funds and property, and as school trustees they must do what is best for the children of the county, To complicate matters, the board members are surrounded by rules and regulations laid down by the State.
For all their work and worry, they know the answer: they will receive plenty of criticism; they’ll get cussed out behind their backs and to their faces; and on the occasions when things turn out well, they’ll get no credit and less thanks.
They acknowledge they are “soft in the head” for ever taking the job, but someone has it to do, so they let their consciences override their selfishness, and they wade in—to do their best in a mean, thankless job.
One of these days—it is to be hoped — every citieen will wake up to the fact that these members of the school board deserve the highest commendation for the r public service.
