J. Hill O’Bannon, Woodville, and Ned Jones, Washington, have recently completed ponds on their respective farms. The Jones pond comprising an area of approximately 1/4 acre will fye utilized mainly to furnish water for spray material, the pond being located in the orchard. The site of the O’Bannon pond is near the farm buildings and thus furnishes fire protection. The 1.2 acre pond will be stocked with 1200 Bream and 120 large mouth black bass.
In connection with the construction of the O’Bannon pond the channel of a main stream was changed to attain better drainage of suirounding areas. The area which drains into the pond was also limited by relocating the stream.
The owners of Fairview Farms, Inc., Culpeper, have cleared considerable land of pines and cedars and are removing! willows and other obstructions along an old ditch in preparation for the construction of an open ditch designed to carry the How. The cleared land will be seeded to a Ladino Clover and Orchard Grass mixture to pasture dry cows and young cattle.
Soil Conservation Service technicians working in co-operation with the Culpeper Soil Conservation district have assisted the local PMA committee in contacting 180 farmers in Cidpepef County who are establishing Ladino clover and Orchard Grass pastures. The PMA committee allocated $12,000 for pasture seeding and improvement. Each farmer may receive assistance on a maximum of 5 acres.
