Raymond W. Dearing, Negro, 42, is being held by authorities in Washington charged with leaving the scene of an accident without offering assistance and involuntary manslaughter, following arrest at an early hour Sunday morning in the death of Mrs. Edith Jenkins Updike and her baby daughter, aged 3, who were struck by an auto Saturday night.
Saturday night, June 17, about 10:15 p.m. Ml'S. [Edith Jenkins TJpdike, 38, and her daughter, Joyce Mae, 3, were struck by an auto on Route 211 near the home of Floyd Compton, on the edge of Washington. Mrs. Jenkins was carrying the child in her arms - when a car swerved from the highway onto the shoulder of the road where the mother was walking. The child was killed instantly. Mrs, Updike died in Front Royal hospital early Sunday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. James Ernest Updike were returning from a trip to the village. Mrs. Updike was carying the baby and the four other children in the family were in the group, three girls and a boy. Facing oncoming traffic, it was stated that the family group was well off £he highway and were a few hundred yards from the lane leading to their home.
It was reported that the driver stopped the car to see if anything was wrong and when he heard the extent of the injuries, he returned to his car and drove off.
Town Sergeant Clyde Jenkins noted from descriptions given of the car and the driver by Mr. Updike and others that the descriptions might fit Raymond W. Dearing, son of Isabella Dearing, of Washington. When Clyde Jenkins visited the Dearing home, the appearance of Dearing’s car, parked outside the house, strengthened Jenkins’ belief that Dearing was the fugitive.
After arresting Dearing, Sheriff QriUer, Deputy Guy Burke and Town Sergeant Clyde Jenkins took him to the office of Commonwealth Attorney R. V. Snead. Here Dearing was questioned and was identified by Updike as the* ■driver of the car which had struck his wife.
Raymond Dearing of 2015 15th St. Washington, D. C., was cony fined to jail and bail was set at 15,000.
No definite date has been set for the preliminary hearing.
