Corn Robs The Farmers

Nitrogen starvation of corn costs Virginia farmers over $2, 000,000 every year.

P. H. DeHart, Extension agronomist at V. P. I., says that this starvation which shows up in yellow color or firing <){ corn can be avoided by sic’}‘-d!ressing with enough nitrogen to meet the needs of the crop.

If enough nitrogen is used between now and the last cuitiva-! tion to keep off the starvation signs through August, it will boost Virginia’s corn yields by at least 15 to 20 bushels per acre. This increase on the 1,140,000 acres of corn in Virginia would add over 2,250,000 bushels of corn to feed bins at a value of about $2,750, 000.

The cost of the additional nitrogen is more than offset by increased yields. For instance two pounds of nitrogen, costing less than 30c, usually will produce one bushel of corn worth $1.25 to $1. 50. On a larger scale, 100 pounds of a nitrogen fertilizer costing hbout $3.00 may be expected to produce eight bushels of corn worth $10. to $12.

DeHart points out that the extra nitrogen tliat reduces starvation in Old Dominion corn fields may be the ammunition that has has the power to win the 1950 “corn war-’ with the Tarheels.

He says that if the “No FiredCorn in August” program is carried out, Virginia farmers call meet their present needs for corn on one- third less acres. This land can be used for pasture and hay to feed livestock, and at the same time, will reduce erosion caused by plowing steep land.
