“When I asked Mr. Kitty Brown what he thought of the women being elected,” continued Gladys, “he said, ‘I have nothing against the men, but if the women were elected, let ’em have it’.”
Tom Leake and William Jefferson seemed thoroughly in favor of the women’s rule. Said Leake: “I think it’s the greatest thing that ever happened, I hope they take the whole county over.”
“I don’t know why he said that,” Gladys commented.
Jefferson, stated, “I think it should be taken over by the ladies —after all, somebody’s got to take it' over.”
Joe Johnson* seemed unperturbed. “If it suits them, it suits me. If the men aren’t capable of running, it, it’s o.k. for the women to take over.” “I don’t know where he got the idea that the men weren’t capable,” said Gladys.
The Sperryville ladies were enthusiastic. Mrs. Sealock and Mrs. Johnson at the post office, both approved. Said Mrs. Sealock, “I think ft’s fine.” “I think it’s fine for the women to take the lead,” said Mrs. Johnson.
Billie ,Schwartz approved. “I like the idea. It’s going to work out all right.” And Miss Louise O’Bannon, sitting on her porch, voiced firmly, “They couldn’t have gotten a better bunch. I think they are going to work wonders.”
Mrs. Nelson Nethers did the talking at the Ser-ice Station. “Mr. Nethers didn’t say a thing,” reported Gladys.
“I think it’s a very good idea,’1* stated Mrs. Nethers. “The men have been running the town long enough. If it’s any possible chance, I’m going to run for sheriff next year.”
Ned Johnson spoke quietly in answer to Glady’s questions. She thought she may have heard a tone of resignation. Anyway his statement was made calmly: “It suits me fine. The town of Washington is in good hands.”
Gladys missed seeing all the citizens of the fair village. She failed to get the Atkina’ and Estes' stores, and she didn’t interview ‘ Archie Dobson, Maybe it’s just as well. ■ «. i
