Bring on the photographers now. The picture they get at this time will bring solace to the wounded pride of the men who have had all this publicity of the women’s election rammed down their throats.
Mayor-elect Mrs. George H. Davis has a black eye. She says she fell down the stairs. She explains at length about the telephone book being left on the steps and she didn’t see it. In fact, she will give a long explanation about the bruises on her elboiws, and about the blow landing on her cheek, and how she slipped and fell, and numerous other stories.
No one doubts the veracity of the pretty mayor-elect. Most people listen to the explanation and smile. She is extended sympathy, and the general public hates to see a lady with a black eye, but maybe George Davis isn’t washing dishes, after all.
There can be a surmise in the general direction of this reasoning: Mr. Davis is a patient man. He took all the election hilarity with a grin-and-bear-it air. But there comes a time when enough’s enough. Yes, sir. It looks like the Mayor-elect is going to do all right when it comes to managing. the business affairs of the town of Washington, but appearances at this time point darkly to the fact that Mr. Davis is in charge at home.__
