Wood Brofc Packing Plant

Wood Brothers' Cold Storage and Packing House was construct* ed and began operations in 1346. Eubank and Caldwell, architects of Roanoke, designed the plant ■with'the assistance of Grabill Man. ufacturers, who installed packing house* equipment, and Virginia Ice Machine Co., who installed cold storage equipment.
The packing shed and machin* ery, with a daily capacity of 6660 bushels, were designed so that the fruit can be packaged in many different types of packages, with the minimum of labor. Apples have been packaged in as many as four different packages at one time. The advantage of this fea* ture is the greater the variety of packages you ean of fea the eon* sumer, the more likely he will purchase your product. The packaged fruit* moves either directly into the cold storage or on to a truck for market via conveyor which reduces handling, therefore eliminating much bruising. • The cold storage, with a capacity of 65,000 bushels, is equipped with air-eondition type of refrigeration giving the cold storage a complete circulation of air every 3% minutes. Under such refrigeration, the humidity is controlled as well as the temperature. These three features allow the fruit to he cooled quickly, giving it longer life free from shriveling and the usual storage off-Aavors.
