Since there is every indication ' that some spray chemicals may be scarce in 1951, it is important that the spray program be planned well in advance of the start of the spraying season. Dormant Spray
This spray is applied to control the different types of scale insects, aphids, and European red mites. What materials or combination of materi^}s to use will depend upon what the situation is, with regard to the insects mentioned above, in the particular orchard. Where the problem is to control San Jose and similar scale insects and aphids, then a combination of oil and a Dinitro chemical spray could be used. For such a spray, use superior oil at 2 per cent and one pound of 40 per cent Dini^o powder or; one quart of regular Dinitro paste in each hundred gallons of spiny. This spray will also reduce the infestation of European red mite.
If scale is not a problem, the grower can control aphids alone by using either li pounds of a 40 percent Dinitro chemical powder, or 11 quarts of a Dinitro chemical paste, or Dinitro 889 or Elgetol 318. The dormant spray should be put on beforq the buds begin to swell. Delayed Dormant Spray J
