The recently expanded apple breeding program of the Virginia Station has not yet produced any new varieties. Several selections have shown promise during the last two seasons and are being propagated for further testing.
In view of the importance placed by the consumer on high color and fine finish of the fruit it should be mentioned here again that the highly colored bud sports of the different varieties may be preferable to the standard strains. ■ The standard strains of Stayman, | -Delicious, Rome Beauty, Jonathan, ' York, Winesap and other varieties * ■ often fail to color welt under Vir- £ ginia conditions.
