Although it Is desirable that the orchard be located on a site elevated to secure good air drainage, sites on the top of ridges way be unsatisfactory for several reasons. Such sites are exposed to heavy winds, which may injure trees and fruit. Exposure to cold winds ’ also may cause winter injury. Slopes along sides of ridges are frequently more desirable than the top if the elevation is ▼ery high.

Soil drainage and soil aeration arfc very important. Often the soil is so hard that tree roots cannot penetrate therefore holding water and causing “wet feet" conditions. The water keeps the oxygen away from the roots and the trees cannot make normal growth and produce good fruit. Before planting trees dig a trench about eight feet deep, if you find grey or molded soil itxis an indication of poor drainage. This may be corrected sometimes, if the sub soil is hard, by sub soiling before the trees are planted.
In general proper elevation, slope, and availability of soils are wore important than soil fertility.
