The keeping of ' the low grade Florida orange off the market benefitted the retailer as much as it did the grower. It prevented my competitor putting me in bad light pricewise. The same would apply to apples. . Possibly the retailer’s answer confuses us all the more. Yet' when we study the market reports we find apples from other producing arears he refers to are moving into consumption, proving popularity with consumers who demand top quality.
Virginia aple growers have evidenced little interest in a Federal Marketing Agreement such as is used in Florida, to keej>_,JosyW^»* grades off the market.' TTuman nature has upset all voluntary agreements to accomplish this purpose. Therefore, we wonder how can the problem of the low grade apple in fresh fruit channels oF" distribution be solved? Without a high percentage of the growers supporting a marketing agreement such a scheme has little chance of, being voted in by the growers. The next best approach has appeared to be an educational one. To convince the grower, first, that every low grade apple loses mon*ey for him. Second, that low grade apples are not wanted by anyone. The processor cannot make quality products out of them. The consumer is disgusted with the amount of waste and disappointed. Third, as our retailer friend pointed out, the low grade apple gums up the entire distribution channel. Therefore, the logical answer to the low grade apple problem .is not to grow them.
To readjust Annettes grown is a drastic and difficult procedure that takes twelve to fifteen years. Yet, if we intend to stay in the apple business; regular plantings are a must.
