Thinning,, a practice found very effective in reducing the low grade apple by our chief competitors, has been used to a Very limited extent in Virginia. This .practice would unquestionably be as effective in reducing the percentage of low grade apples in our crop as it is for our competitors. These measures with good rhodent control, soil management and the other factors that go to make up good apple orchard management play a big part in reducing the percentage of low grade fruit.
As for improving our packaging methods the uniting together of growers into an economical packing unit or by having a custom,
as the market demands it, has proven to be a logical solution to our packing problems.
The better our apples are the greater will be our returns from promoition. Leaders in Virginia’s • apple industry recognize how pitifully email our promotional efforts are, but hesitate to recommend an increase until a greater percentage of our apples are worthy of promotion.
Somg day the European markets may reopen to our apples. I have confidence that if it is at all possible to reopen them, Mr. Fred ’• Mot* with his herculean efforts % and zeal will do so.
