Florida Mutual ia attempting with more than 75 percent of the growers by volume signed up, to do for themselves and by themselves the job of applying such industry controls as will maintain solvency for the growers; will put cost-of-production squarely into their selling price; something that no major fruit has been ’able to do up to now, with the possible exception of California Fruit Growers Exchange. —The Mutual’s first working year was the 1949 season. Last year, quick-frozen orange concentrate
their use' over a period of time have reached a point where they can be recommended for orchards that are located on frost-free sites. The dinitro chemical sprays for thinning the crop during the prebloom and blossoming periods are more hazardous for orchards that are planted on sites and in areas where late spring frost may further reduce the fruit set. Harmone sprays applied in the pastbloom period would be safer.
The third method of thinning apples is the old hand way of pulling off the fruit. The big advantage of h»nd thinning is that it gives the most desirable distribution of the crop, and it can be done when all danger of frost is past. It is a time-consuming method and is more expensive than thinning by pruning or chemical sprays. It is also, in most cases, done too late to secure the fullest benefits from thinning. In order to promote annual cropping and to secure the best si*e and color of the fruit that is lefi on the trees it is necessary that the thinning be done early. Where pruning is used to reduce the quantity of small and poor colored apples by removing weak fruiting wood the question of when it should be done is taken care of because pruning is done during the dormant season. The time for applying chemical thinning sprays is also fairly well set 'because if dinitro chemicals are used they are put on at a particular stage of bud development, this is also the case when harmone materials are used for thinning apples.
But when the hand method of thinning is fised, the timing of the operation becomes a more difficult question. It should be done
