Perhaps they sing of coals at Newcasle; may be they chant of oranges in Florida; tis true they cite their fine horses in Kentuckyr and we in Rappahannock this week take a minute off to laud the appie and the fruit of the county.

We know full well that no other apples can compare with our own in Rappahannock, but it galls us to realize that the whole world does not know it.

What we need to do is to take a few lessons from some of these high pressure sales groups, who sing long and loud the praises of some potent patent medicine or soiqo brand of cigarettes, and each of us in Rappahannock could learn to spread abroad the fame of Rappahannock apples.

Perhaps the scholarly approach to the subject of “Hailing King Apple” should begin with the menttbn of apples in the history of mankind. Nope, that wouldn’t work; for the Good Book begins the story by putting the apple in Eve’s hands in the form of the tempter. Apples since that day have succeeded in living down part of the bad name, but all'Eves since that day are still accused of being the ones who lead the Adams astray. Let’s drop that beginning.

From ancient tales there comes the story of the golden apples that were .dropped fm attract Atalanta’s attention, thereby causing her to lose a foot-mce. Oh, gracious, the apple was us&Ejto “fix” a race; that places it as an instrument of cheating. Let’s drop that idea, too. . - r •

After all, being scholarly isn’t everything, and besides, the history of an apple doesn’t mean that it is either good or bad today, so let the emphasis of the moment fall on the present-day apple—a thing of beauty, of health, and'a means of livelihood, and “summa cum laude,” a potential apple pie, a pleasant accompaniment to a good book, and a present for the teacher!

A friend tells this apple story:

In a restaurant, he calmly asked “What kind of pie?”

The portly gentleman on the other side of the counter, leaned across, fixed the customer with a glaring eye, and chanted, “Ve Sgot apple pie; anybody that don’t like' apple pie is a d - -,- fool; vhat kind o’ pie do you vant?”

“Apple pie,” was the meek answer.
