Results of the outlying com hybrid variety experiment conducted on Charlie Estes’ Schwarts farm last year, while NOT CONCLUSIVE, has aroused much concern over: (1) whether varieties adapted to Rappahannock’s climatic conditions are known; (2) whether blackbirds or, (3) too deep cultivation was the cause of an open pollinated (old type) com nearly equallying and in some cases surpassing the yield from recommended hybrid varieties! To get such factual data was precisely why the experiment was conducted.
Of the 15 hybrids grown in the experiment, eight were on .thej recommended list as a result of proven superiority at the Experiment Stations in the Piedmont while others had shown promise.
Readers of this column will recall that the com in the Estes experiment was hill dropped aiming at three stalks per hilL Blackbirds proved a decided menace by pulling up many of the young seedlings to eat the sprouted grains. The extent of tills sort of damage of course influenced the results as normally sound methmatical corrections could not in some cases offset the differences in stand.
