One of the best mottoes that a group of musical amateufrs could adopt would be: “Poco a poco.” Little by little is the right way to tackle any study; and if music is worth our attention at all, it is worth being taken seriously, like hny other study in which we seek to educate ourselves and by which we wish to make of ourselved whole and balanced citizens of the world.
Yet music is not, and should not be made, a forbiddingly difficult subject. Our greatest desire should be to make the enjoyment of music poseible. That isthe purpose of the music festival for our county. It is not necessary to know all the big works; we can learn to study examples of the beauties of form, tune, rhythm, program, and) pageantry. We can learn that an understanding of all these, while not absolutely necessary, will increase the listener’s enjoyment
