Avon Mills Selected
As Music Festival Site
The contract has been signed leasing Avon Mills for use for the -summer musie esmpand location for three concerts by the Virginia State Orchestra the first three weeks in August.
F. Clyde Baggarly, owner of Avon Mills, states that it was included in the contract to use the name “Avon Mills” in connection with the location of the music camp. A deed dated 1852, when the property was sold by the Jett family, shows that the old mill was known as Avon Mills, and Mr. Baggarly wishes the name to be retained.
Actually, the name Avon goes back into the 1700‘s, when a lord Effington received the land in a grant and referred to it ais Avondale, the name of his home in England. Mr. Baggdrly’s effort - to keep the name preserves a 200year-old title in the county.
The contract Iwas signed Saturday, April 14, by Mr. Baggarly and 'William Heaker, conductor of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Work of restoration on the old Mill—Avon Mills—will begin as soon as possible in order to be reedy for the concerts, beginning August <6 and running for three weeks. Paul A. Walker, general contractor, is in charge of the restoration.
