S/Sgt. L. J. Dennis has been transferred from •Camp LeJeune, N. C., to electronics school. Treasure Island, Calif. Mrs. Dennis and her son recently flew to California to be with Sgt. Dennis.

Laying out and marking of contour lines for rotations in contour strips continues to be the most important practice to be carried out at this season by the technicians of the Culpeper Soil Conservation District. _____
In Culpeper county, Cahin McCloud, whose farm is located be> tween Slate Mills and Reva, has marked an additional 20 acres of land which he recently acquired, to be established in a contour strip rotation. Carl L, Padgett, Amissville, has established approximately 22 acres in contour strips.
Rappahannock county farmers recently establishing rotations in contour strips on sloping land include Jim Yates, Peola Mills, 20 acres; C. R. Wire, “The Shade” approximately 80 acres; H. L. ManwarWng, Rudasills Mill, an additional 35 acres. On all of the above farms all natural draws and swails are being left in sod for a sod waterway. The sod waterway
is wide enoug^i to carry the surplus run-off water from the field without erosion damage to a safe disposal point. Tillage tools are lifted when crossing these waterways so the grass will not be destroyed. The edge of the waterway is purposely left ragged to retard the formation of gullies wh$re the sod of the waterway joins the cultivated land.
Maintaining sod waterways is largely a matter of continued care and common sense. In addition to lifting or straightening harrows, disc, and tillage implements when crossing, care should be taken never to plow parallel to the waterway. The stand of grass should be limed, fertilized and mowed when necessary. In some cases where the waterway is large enough to justify it, the grass and clover is mowed for hay.
