When anaesthetics were invented, some people denounced them as an attempts to thwart God’s will. But perhfcps in the end they were grateful for the boon.

For endless centuries; lunatics were treated to systematic and conscientious brutality. Demons inhabited those who (were mad and were only to be driven out by inflicting terrible pain. These ages appear strange to us. Perhaps our age will appear strange to future generations,^ for we have our own set of demons under other names.

We are subject to many, false beliefs; beliefs as fantastic as those of the 17th Century when all believed in demons, and black magic, and witchcraft. To not believe in witches was heresy—for a witch rode a broom and injured her neighbors from malice and sheer hatred and not from any desire for gain. It explained many misfortunes.

Science, today, has given some insight into natural causation and has dissapated the general belief in magic. But the basic fears which grave rise to those beliefs are still with us.
