Now men often succeed (without sacrificing their self importance) in explaining many of the misfortunes to which they are subject. But sometimes the misfortune befalls the whblly virtuous. What are we to say to that case? Shall we blame a witch? Since none of us is wicked by hypothesis, this must be due to some malice, some hatred—rather than the hope of gain.
Witches were burned. There is a Biblical warrant for this, for the Bible says: “Thou shall not suffer a witch to live.” Cancer is a sort of witch. We should not suffer it to increase every year as it does. Science tries to burn this witch with drugs, and radium, and x-rays. But there must be a better way.
