There's'no reason to doubt the fellow in any part of his story. Is there man or boy in Rappahannock county iwho hasn’t been tempted to bury half the seeds he was designated to plant?
A couple of youngsters were sent out to plant corn-field beans. It was a beautiful day, made-toorder for fishing,^ not for planting beans down tile long rows in the cornfield.
The lads got down the length of the corn row, and found that the trip ended beside a nice sassafras patch on the otheT side of the rail fence. It was more than a boy’s nature could stand in the face of such temptation. All remaining bean-seeds were hurled beneath the loving shelter of those sassafras bushes.
"We dared not tell pa,” said one of the lads, “for we knew we’d be tarred for fair!”
“But, would you believe it,” he continued, “every one of those beans came up in the sassafras patch? Yes, sir. Finest crop of beans I ever saw. You could just crawl around under those sassafras^bushes and gather the beans in clusters. And not a single bean came up in the corn field.”
