Mass x-ray surveys are being conducted to determine more accurately the total extent of the overall problem of tuberculosis and the real magnitude of its incidence in areas of greeter than average morbidity. This knowledge will make possible more prompt and effective (therefore, more economical) utilization of tuberculosis control measures in a nation-wide effort aimed at virtual eradication. For the first time in history total eradication looms as a truly feasible goal in the United States, due to (1) the tremendous reduction in mortality rate which has already taken place in the past fifty years, (2) modern methods of education and communication (by which all segments of the population can readily be reached) and (3) the recent technical triumph of minifilm.
