The following yellowed clipping from an old Blue Ridge Guide was sent to Rappahannock News from a reader in Birmingham, Alabama. ‘’‘The eff'eminization and -progressive tendency of the world—and we do not mean to say that these terms are synonomous—are nowhere more plainly seen than in the simple things of bank supplies. Time was iwhen all a bank needed, for its work was a bottle of red ink, a bottle of black ink, a dirty sponge, a high stool, sleeve protectors to have the sleeves Saturday like they were Monday, an eye shade, a few pens and a foot press. Now every • well-conducted bank has a typewriter, an adding machine to save the brains, a chamois skin to remove the polish from the nose, a marble roller to moisten the fingers in counting money, a box of scented powder to camouflage the face, a bookkeeping machine to do the thinking, a mirrow to show whether or not the lily really has been paint-* ed, fly paper to catch and hold the flies that bald-headed cashiers formerly were satisfied to smack to death on the bald spot.”
The rest of the clipping states that it’s time the county kept up with the rest of the changes and should take time to show gratitude to the boys returning from the war. “Let’s have an old-fashioned all-day gathering with dinner on the ground for the men who fought in this war and for the remaining men of the Confederate army,” continues the clipping.
