Despite all its recent publicity, Washington, “The First of Them All,” Virginia, Rappahannock, is still referred to as "Little Washington.”

It’s a source of touchy feelings among some of the 245 citizens of Rappahannock’s county seat, and some of the Sperryvillians delight in poking fun by speaking of “Little Washington.” There’s one good-sized citizen of Sperryville who insists upon sending bills to a customer, addressed to “Little Washington.” The customer very promptly returns the bills, with the notation: No Such Place. And the customer refused to pay the bill until it is sent with the proper “Washington, Virginia” on it.

Mr. Allie Slaughter is the latest Washington citizen to have his revenge for the thoughtlessness of a fellow who did not know that the “First .Washington of Them All” resented the term “little.” Mr. Slaughter’s letter came from Crozet to “Little Washington,” so Mr. Slaughter directed his answer to “Little Crozet, Albemarle County, Virginia.”
