Kenland Red Clover

Gains In Popularity

With State Farmers

Kenland red clover, a hardy, high-yielding variety, is becoming increasingly popular with Virginia farmers, says W. W. Lewis, associate agronomist at VPI.

He says the variety is well adapted to that part of the red clover belt where southern anthracnose is prevalent and frequently very destructive. When subjected to heavy artificial inoculation, more than twice as many Kenland plants survive as of any other variety.

An average of 39 tests over a five-year period in eight states shows that Kenland yielded 16 per cent more forage than the best of numerous other clover strains. At some locations, the yield advantage for Kenland has been over 40 per cent.

In Virginia at four locations, Kenland has consistently outyielded other varieties. For instance, at Williamsburg the three-year average yield for enland was 5,862 pounds per acre; while the nearest contender, Ky. 215, yielded 5,539; and Virginia Adapted dropped to 4,760 pounds.

At Staunton, the two-year average yield for Kenland was 5,494 pounds per acre. Ky. 215, again the runner-up, yielded only 4,642 pounds.

Yield comparisons were similar at Blacksburg and at Orange.

Lewis says in terms of soil improvement Kenland’s yielding ability means additional nitrogen and organic matter. Tops and roots of Kenland with a 40 per cent hay yield advantage would contain 35 to 45 pounds more nitrogen to the acre than ordinary clover. The soil building advantage alone is often worth the entire seed cost to users of Kenland.

Though certified seed production of Kenland in 1950 was only a third of a million pounds, the 1951 production will be much larger—possibly 2,000,000 pounds. By 1954 or 1955 production may reach or pass the 15,000,000-lb. mark.
