“Forest Fire,” a true story of our forests by “Smokey,” the forest-fire-preventing bear in comic book form, has been presented to every child in grade school, or at least to every family having children in the grades. Already, a number of school principals, teachers, and pupils have expressed their appreciation for this medium of conservation education in pur schools. These booklets were made available through the County Forestry Committee, The Rappahannock National Bank, and the P.-T.A. organizations.
Several 4-H’ers having top quality Poland China pigs for sale as breeding stock include: Jackie Sisk, son of MiRon Sisk; Aylette Buckner, III, son of A. H. Buckner, Jr.; Ennis Jenkins, Jr., son of Ennis Jenkins; Larry Wayland, son of Earl Wayland, all of Sperryville; and Buddy Tapp, son of John Tapp of Amissv'ille. Though these pigs are only just about at weaning age, one boar has been sold to Nelson Atkins of Flint Hill and another has been engaged by a breeder of Greene county. Rappahannock farmers who will be needing a registered Poland China male for fall service, or who wish to improve the quality of their she-stock, should contact one of these boys.
Whoa! At this point, Dewey Anderson, farmer of Amissville, came into the office . . . asked about Poland China gilts . . . and bought three!
D. D. Miller of Washington reports having three purebred Hampshire pigs “too nice for slaughter.” There are two gilts and a boar. Hampshires, too, are a popular breed, so these should be readily ‘taken up’ by farmers of the county.
G. B. Allison, county agent of Page county, was in Rappahannock yesterday scoring the 4-H sheep projects being conducted this year by: Donald Gore, Francis Bruce, Jackie Sisk, Kelly Updike, Melvin Williams, Douglas Martin, Richard Griffith, and Bobby Atkins. By next Thursday we hope to be able to announce the winners.
