A Rappahannock Fable
Once upon a time a strange Little Animal came to the home of the Millers. (The name Miller i§ used because it is universal in the county and can justify the title of this tale.)
The Little Animal was welcomed into the Miller home and extended all the gracious hospitality the family knew.
Since the Little Animal had brought along with him all his necessities, he did not help with the farm chores to earn his keep.
The Miller family was kind, but, most of all, one of the Miller boys befriended the strange Little Animal. He talked kindly with him; he showed the Little Animal some places to cross the swamps by stepping carefully on certain stones and thus avoid getting his feet soiled by mud; he often chopped holes in the earth to help the Little Animal with his digging; and he spoke kindly of the Little Animal when some of the neighbors criticized his strangeness.
