Contestants Named For
Sheep Shearing Event
Ten 4-H club members have been chosen to compete in the state sheep shearing contest, to be held at V.P.I. sometime during the week of the annual 4-H short course, June 25-30.
The boys won the right to vie for state honors at a recent sheep shearing contest in Staunton, which was conducted by E. A. Warner, of the Sunbeam Corporation, Chicago.
In the order of their placings, they are: Billy Ramsey, Albemarle; Harold Hotinger, Rockbridge; Frank Kessling, Loudoun; Pat Stewart, Rockbridge; Billy Armstrong, Highland; Larry Arehart, Augusta; Jack Huffman, Page; William Maxey, Buckingham; Jerry Hoak, Page; and Nelson Grove, Augusta.
The top boy, Billy Ramsey, has clipped some 3,000 sheep during tne past two years.
Winner of the state contest will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago where he will compete for national honors. Expenses are paid by United Wool Growers’ Association in Harrisonburg. The Sunbeam Corporation sponsors the national contests

Against Insects, Diseases
The annual battle against bugs ind diseases will soon be on in • Virginia’s home gardens, and Ex:ension specialists at V.P.I. have i few tips.
They say there are a few basic rules for spraying or dusting. Start applications early. Don’t vait until serious injury has been lone. Use the recommended materials. The material must control :he pests without injury to the plants. Be thorough—cover the entire plant. Spray or dust often enough for good controy.
A copper-rotenone dust is effective in controlling most of the ieaf-spot diseases, and insects of the home garden. It will control leaf spots and leaf blights on vegetables and flowers, and most of ;he common garden insects such as the Mexican bean beetle, the cucumber beetle, potato beetles, cabbage worms, and the young stages of aphids or plant lice.
A 20 per cent sabadilla dust or a 10 per cent activated sabadilla dust is better than rotenone for the control of Harlequin cabbage bug, squash bug, and green stinkbug.
DDT-copper dusts and sprays are suggested for use on Irish potatoes.
To controy aphids or plant lice, use nicotine sulfate.
