Of the prize money, $800 will go to student winners, $100 will be divided among the winning schools in ’the high school and grade school divisions, and another $100 will go to that teacher or instructor whom it is deemed has done the most to encourage effective student participation in the contest over the past years.
There are a total of 162 student prizes, which includes 14 separate prizes for each of the first seven grades. Those students in the 8th through the 12th grades will compete for 64 prizes, of which the top award is $100. In addition, the winning' student will be honored by hatfing his or her poster reproduced in full color on nearly a quarter million KEEP VIRGINIA GREEN book covers as distributed by VIRGINIA FORESTS, Inc., each year. Last year’s student winner was Evelyn Dale Brooks, Thomas Jefferson High School, Richmond.
Purpose of the contest is to create a better understanding of the importance of the forest and water resources of .Virginia. This is achieved by changing the theme from year to year, and by providing reference material for participating students and teachers. Posters submitted this year should illustrate one or more of the many ways in which the forests and woodlands of this'Nation are used for recreational purposes
