Traffic Fatality
Jease Lee Ward, Sr., 76, of Washing-ton, Va., and Washington, D.C., was killed 'instantly in a 2-car collision Saturday, November 3, on Route 211 near Washington, Va. This makes a total of three traffic fatalities in Rappahannock County this year.
Injured in the crash were Mrs. Jesse Ward who sustained a broken ankle and knee cap and lacerations of the face; Lloyd William Gaylord of Fort Belvoir had a lacerated forehead and fractured ribs; Latane Fletcher Gaylord of Fort Belvoir had a lacerated right leg. Waiter Lee Kntscher, Jr., of Alexandria sustained a dislocated collar bone and Kathleen V. Kntscher also of Alexandria had a fractured back and injured left leg.
Trooper R. M. Dodson of Luray said the accident occurred when William Gaylord passed another vehicle and lost control of his car, crashing head-on into the Ward car driven by Mrs. Ward. It was raining and the road was slippery.
On October 31, at 11 p.m. a mile and a half west of Woodville on Route 522 a 1954 Chevrolet Corvette owned and operated by John Paul Matis of Cleveland, Ohio, struck a cow belonging to William N. Lane. Damage to the car amounted to $400.
Lewis Bryant Pullen of Washington, Va., received minor injuries when a frontwheel support broke on his ’57 Chevrolet and the vehicle ran up the bank and turned over. The accident occurred on Thursday, November 1 on Route 622 in Gid Brown Hollow. The car was a total loss.
