Culpeper County was the nucleus of the the six-county Culpeper Soil Conservation District organized in 1939. Within the next several years the counties of Orange, Madison, Greene and Rappahannock joined in. Early in 1962 a portion of Fauquier County was accepted as a part of the Culpeper Soil Conservation District. The District covers one of the most progressive agricultural areas in the south, and has been a fore-runner in the advancement of new ideas in not only the conservation of soil, water, forest and wildlife but all phases of agriculture alike.
