Most important,, the test can detect the disease early, sometimes when least suspected. For example, in the state of Ohio in 1960 about 22% of the people who died from TB never knew they had it. The simple skin test and early treat, ment might have prevented many of these deaths and stopped spread of the disease to others.
"The Great White Plague,” as TB used to be called, is no longer the plague that it was. But it is still an ominous threat, especially to children and young people. In babies who become infected from parents with unsuspected TB, medical experience indicates that early treatment can prevent TB meningitis, the brain infection that was formerly almost 100% fatal.
