Why Forage Testing

vary so much in feed value depending on: stage of maturity at harvest, variety, weediness, weather conditions at harvest time, etc,, that Morrison’s standards have proven of little value. As a result we have been guesstimating forage feed values by employing our senses (color, leafiness, odor, etc.). Now, these inatcurate methods need no longer be employed; VPI has a forage testing laboratory. This laboratory has an anticipated testing capacity of approximately 1500 samples annually. Beyond a doubt this free service will become to the livestock feeder what the soil testing laboratory is to the crop producer.

For decades we have had much factual information on the nutritive requirements of different types of farm animals at different ages and fed for different purposes. Also we have accurate data on content of feed concentrates. Thus the big gap in computing rations for forage consuming
