shotgun, the rifle is still a stranger, something to mistrust and outlaw. The most common objection to the rifle is its long range. “They will shoot a mile." The rifle does have good range, one of the features making it ideal, for deer, but does this make it more dangerous than the shotgun? Statistics show that the majority of ALL gun accidents occur within a range of 50 yards of the firearm — or well within shotgun range. Most deer hunting is done in rolling, hilly country, much of which is covered* .by forests. A bullet that hisses its mark either hits the ground or a tree or expends itself high in the air. Most deer are taken at ranges of under 100 yards and its doubtful that' many bullets travel much beyond that. Another.objection often put forth is that the rifle bullet will ricochet off its course. A steel-jacketed military bullet or a solid point 22 will ricochet, but this type of bullet is not used in hunting. The hunting bullet has
