Black Bear Enjoys Chester Gap Carnival
Back during colonial times bear-bating was one of the most popular attractions at a fair and carnival. Time marches on and everything changes to the extent that a black bear attended the Chester Gap Carnival on Wednesday night and enjoyed the by-products of the cotton candy stand and more or less bated the only people who witnessed its late appearance.
There were foot prints around the food stand but it was tightly secured for the night against prowlers and did not offer hospitality to the visitor. The bear evidently enjoyed its visit as it was seen in the same vicinity crossing Route 522 late Sunday evening by Randolph Williams and Vernon Mills who estimated its weight at 400 pounds. Word just hadn't gotten around in the animal kingdom that the carnival closed on Saturday night. Maybe the bear appresicates the View from Chesters Gap especially with the moon lighting the valley
