such students an opportunity to see the college faculty member's job “from the inside* and to learn its attractions, its compensations, its drawbacks and its opportunities. Each Undergraduate Fellow is assigned to a faculty sponsor, usually in his major field and usually the faculty member who nominated him for the appointment. The sponsor acts as a counselor to the student throughout his year as an Undergraduate Fellow. Each nomination must be approved by department chairman, the dean of the Miami school or college in which the student is enrolled, and the University Provost. The scope of the student’s experience in this program depends largely upon the student and the sponsoring faculty member. The student may help prepare lectures or classroom or laboratory demonstrations, grade papers, attend faculty meetings or even teach a class occasionally under the faculty member’s guidance. Some faculty sponsors have encouraged the Undergraduate Fellows to visit their family and friends to gain a better understanding of the academic and social life of a college professor.
