New Local Forest
Warden Named
Cheif Forest Warden R.M. Johnson of Rappahannock County announces the strengthening of his fire control organization by the appointment of Turner Settle, Viewtown, as local forest warden. Mr. Settle will assist in forest fire control activities in Jackson district. Chief Forest Warden Johnson, in commenting on the appointment of Mr. Settle advised that contrary to popular notions, forest wardens are not salaried employees of the State. They are public upirutu men. who have agreed to mobilize local man power and fight forest fires in their community. They are paid by the State on an hoprly basis only while investigating and suppressing forest fires. Mr. Settle will be given a commission by Governor Harrison which will convey the authority to hire forest fire fighters and to help enforce the State forest fire laws in accordance with instructions from the State Forester and Chief Forest Warden Johnson. Forest wardens have the authority to summon able bodied men for forest fire fighting. Any forest fire occurring in this vicinity should be promptly reported to Mr. Settle or Mr. Johnson.

Replacing Blighted Types
The Chinese chestnut, one of the very few chestnuts that can be grown in the eastern United States, is reviving a kind of nut which was destroyed by blight in the 1920’s in America.
Two new orchard varieties of the blight-resistant Chinese chestnut have been released by the U. S. Department of Agriculture to commercial nut growers and nurserymen for vegetative reproduction.
These new varieties, Crane and Orrin, are superior in keeping quality and flavor to other varieties of Chinese chestnuts now grown east of the Mississippi. They were selected and tested at Beltsville, Maryland, by the Agricultural Research Service. Chinese chestnuts were introduced years ago by the USDA scientists to fill the void left by the blight in the 1920’s which destroyed America's native chestnuts. The native American tree was found in most of the eastern U. S., but only a very few isolated trees survived the blight.
