Mr. Gronouskl emphasized that ZIP Code is now in actual use, even though the optical scanner is not expected to be operational for about 18 months. The scanner will sort the mail electronically by ZIP Code in the larger post offices. The coding system now helps the individual in two ways, he said. Pre-sorting by volume mailers already allows more time for handling individual letters. And the Department today is transmitting mail from the sectional center nearest the point erf origin to :he sectional center nearest the point of destination, skipping s’pme mail handlings along‘the way.
