It is clear tnat preventive programs should involve young people, both in planning and in implementation. For them the social pressures to drink or to drink excessively are often intense. They need to know the facts about alcohol as they formulate their attitudes toward drinking. More important, they need to see in their parents and others a tangible demonstration of the principles and ideals we cherish for them. God is able to satisfy the deepest needs of the human being and can provide the power to resist the destructive practices of our day. This has consistently been the message of the churches, but it has frequently taken the demonstration by a group such as Alcoholics Anonymous to make this message meaningful in actual human experience, We encourage the members of our churches, therefore, not to be content with precepts alone. We urge that they strive to demonstrate their comitment to God through such behavior as will inspire others to make this same commitment.
To this ministry we, both clergy and laity, pledge ourselves.
