Caution Urged In
Long Holiday Travel
Pointing to only five traffic deaths during the past Memorial Day weekend, considered a three-day holiday for statistical purposes, Colonel C, W. Woodson, Jr., Chairman of the Governor's Highway Safety Committee and Superintendent of State Police called for similar caution during the Fourth of July holiday. 'The five deaths during the weekend of Memorial Day constitute a far better record than the average non-holiday weekend," he said. "The second weekend in June, as an example, took 24 lives during 54 hours. Colonel Woodson noted that the Fourth of July holiday will also be considered a threeday one and that the holiday* last year, statistically considered a four-day one, since the 4th fell on a Thursday, saw 24 deaths. "The Memorial Day experience shows that traffic casualties can be drastically curbed with a little effort and forethought on the part of the motoring public," he continued. "Haste, impatience, alcohol, exhaustion and lack of consideration towards others are the killers." He concluded by asking every* one planning to drive over the weekend to give grave consideration to a heavier traffic load they must face and toremember always that one does not need to be at fault himself to become involved in a crash.
