Just how “glorious" will the Fourth of July be for you if your child loses his sight as the result of handling firecrackers? How happy will your "holiday* be if your child provides the firecrackers which causes another person to lose his sight, or to be badly burned?
Fourth of July fireworks still linger as a definite menace to the nation's youth. The Virginia Society for the Prevention of Blindness reminded parents today in a pre-holiday warning. "There are many youngsters hurt by firecrackers and rockets every year", said Miss Margaret F. Bowers, Executive Director of the Virginia Society. . Miss Bowers added that a random survey of the country for 1963 by the National Society, of which the Virginia Society is an affiliate, disclosed that at least twentyeight boys and girls had suffer ed damaged or blinded eyes in fireworks accidents. The greatest number of these vision victims fell within the ten to fourteen year age group and two were tots under five. Twenty-nine states and a number of cities have laws based on the National Fire Protection Association's model fireworks ordinance, which means they prohibit the sale and use of fireworks by individuals, but allow public displays of fireworks under safe, supervised conditions. There is a federal law prohibiting the transporting of fireworks into any state for use outlawed by that state. Some states blatantly invite tourists to take home Illegal fireworks.
