The estimated five million alcoholics in t h e United States and the direct involvement of at least 20 million others in their problems cannot be ignored. In our opinion, alcoholism has reached epidemic proportions We applaud rehabilitative efforts and believe our churches should continue to be involved in these. Therapy, however, does not strike at the heart of this problem. Preventive action is imperative, so that millions not yet involved will be spared the blighting effects of alcoholism. Such preventive action will be furthered by research in this field. As yet we know far too little ?bout the,causes of alcoholism. Nevertheless, we must develop a plan of action based upon the knowledge we have, focusing upon the dynamic interaction of the individual and society. We recognize that preventive measures are the proper concern of government, law, medicine, education. Industry and social work. We commend these efforts. The churches have a unique contribution to make because man is spiritual as well as emotional and physical in his being and in the Individual these factors are vitally interrelated. The perspective of the churches is invaluable to state and national governments in the enlargement of their programs relating to alcohol. We are aware that government programs cannot do all that is needed. Hence while recognizing the necessity of teaching scientific facts about alcohol, the churches also recognize the need to teach the theological and moral principles relating to the use and abuse of alcohol. The excessive use of alcohol is unacceptable in the sight of both God and man. Such usage inhibits communion with God, lessens the sense of responsibility to others and is destructive to
